New Egypt feels different from many of Ocean County's coastal and suburban communities. Agriculture remains visible in everyday life, while Main Street gives the township a compact village center. Nearby Flea Market TraditionNew Egypt Flea Market Village uses the New Egypt name but is located nearby at 933 Monmouth Road in Cream Ridge. The long-running market traces its operation to 1959 and contains more than 40 historical-style vendor buildings.

History & Community Heritage
Plumsted Township was incorporated on March 11, 1845 from portions of Jackson Township, when the area was still part of Monmouth County. It became part of the newly created Ocean County in 1850. The Township says the Plumsted name honors Clement Plumsted, an English Quaker who acquired a large tract of land.

Plumsted Township Schools
The legacy NJTGO page reflected an older four-school configuration. The current Plumsted Township School District operates three schools serving approximately 1,210 students from preschool through grade 12.

New Egypt Speedway: 2026 Status
Closed for the 2026 racing season under current ownershipNew Egypt Speedway at 720 County Road 539 remains an important part of the community's motorsports history, but its official December 1, 2025 announcement states that the racetrack will not operate during the 2026 season under current ownership unless a new owner or operating arrangement is established. The property continues to advertise certain non-racing uses, and the quarter-midget track was expected to continue separately.
NJTGO accuracy note: older New Egypt guides may describe the Speedway as an active racing attraction. For 2026, visitors should not assume that regular New Egypt Speedway racing is taking place.
